La plupart des professeurs de sciences et de mathématiques sont persuadés de transmettre un savoir idéologiquement neutre. Beaucoup estiment donc inutile de réfléchir aux valeurs que transmet leur cours. Quant aux élèves, ils sont d'autant plus vulnérables aux valeurs transmises dans les cours de sciences qu'ils acceptent ces enseignements comme s'ils ne proposaient que des vérités prouvées. Le but de cet ouvrage est de montrer, dans le détail des cours et des manuels, comment un cours de sciences véhicule une vision du monde (et donc des valeurs et des idéologies), tout autant qu'un cours de français ou d'histoire. Même les professeurs conscients de ce problème se sentent souvent démunis dans la pratique. C'est pourquoi ce livre ne présente pas des idées générales mais des analyses concrètes de manuels et de cours. Cet ouvrage s'adresse d'abord à des professeurs de sciences et de mathématiques, mais aussi à tous ceux qui désirent comprendre comment les sciences transmettent une représentation de la société.
